This is an original and sweeping analysis of the hitherto neglected, yet pivotal. late Franco dictatorship in Spain that draws on extensive new research.

Spain Transformed addresses the sweeping social and cultural changes that characterized the late Franco regime. Essential to explaining the dictatorship’s extraordinary longevity, the strikingly successful transition to democracy following Franco’s death in 1975. and the peace and prosperity enjoyed by Spain since then, this watershed period has received scant attention from scholars until now. This wide-ranging collection reassesses the dictatorship’s latter years by drawing on a wealth of new material and ideas, using an interdisciplinary approach.

NIGEL TOWNSON is Senior Lecturer in the History of Political Thought and Social and Political Movements at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. Author of The Crisis of Democracy in Spain: Centrist Politics under the Second Republic, 1931-1936, he is also editor of a general history of Spanish republicanism: El republicanismo en España, 1830-1977; three volumes of the work of the Spanish writer and Civil War exile Arturo Barea; and a counterfactural history of modern Spain: Historia virtual de España, 1870-2004.
