Description

Frans Hals (c.1582/3–1666) was a revolutionary in the field of portraiture and used his colour and paint brush to express ultimate freedom by breaking convention. Famed for his unique painting style and method of capturing light and atmosphere, he went on to influence many emerging artists.

Professor Seymour Slive (1920–2014) was one of the greatest leading authorities on Dutch art. He was Emmet Blakeney Gleason Professor of Fine Arts Emeritus at Harvard University and former Elizabeth and John Moors Cabot Director of the Harvard Art Museums.

“In this sumptuously illustrated volume, the artist’s swashbuckling brush strokes are elucidated by Slive’s rapier sharp wit and much fancy footwork.”—Wall Street Journal

“Just open this new Phaidon edition anywhere and you will find insights that make you see and think freshly about beloved works of art that you think you already understand completely.”—Arthur Wheelock, Curator, Northern European Art, National Gallery of Art
